Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle Dog als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: ockerfarbenes Schlafzimmer

Few standards state so openly what a dog was built for. According to the FCI, the aim was a strong dog willing to bite, with great endurance, capable of gathering wild cattle. Even the teeth are explained by the work: stubborn stock are driven by bites or nips at the heels.

FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs, except Swiss Cattle Dogs), Section 2 Cattle Dogs, Standard No. 287 Australian Cattle Dog (Australischer Treibhund), without working trial
Country of origin Australia
Height at the withers Males 46 to 51 cm, females 43 to 48 cm
Weight Not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy Median 14,0 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs, including only 117 Cattle Dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat Smooth double coat: short, dense undercoat, dense, straight, hard, close-fitting waterproof outer coat; averaging 2,5 to 4 cm on the body
Colours according to the standard Blue mottled or speckled with tan markings, also black or blue on the head; red speckled, with or without darker red head markings

Collie, Dingo and a touch of Dalmatian

The first settlers had few staff, no fenced land and imported dogs unable to manage the cattle. According to the standard, the generally accepted origin is blue-merle Smooth Collies crossed with Dingoes, later joined by Dalmatians and black-and-tan Kelpies. A Bull Terrier cross did not work well with cattle. The FCI definitively recognised the breed on 20.03.1972.

A protector with a suspicious streak

Devoted and naturally protective, the standard calls this a born guardian of herder, herd and property. Naturally suspicious of strangers, they must still remain amenable to handling. They are also exceptionally intelligent, courageous and constantly alert. For you, this means early, calm encounters with visitors and clear boundaries at the garden fence.

Without a job, trouble follows

The movement should be tireless: this is no dog for two brief outings. Treibball, herding, tracking or agility keep them content. Practising calm on a mat matters just as much. Redirect heel-nipping from the beginning.

A coat for every weather

The short, harsh coat is waterproof and surprisingly easy to care for. Weekly brushing usually suffices; during shedding, the undercoat comes out in clumps.

Hearing, medication and lifespan

Congenital deafness is the key concern. Among 524 British puppies given a BAER hearing test at 4 to 10 weeks, 9,7 per cent were deaf in one ear and 1,7 per cent in both; a pigmented facial patch was associated with lower risk (Marsh et al. 2021). Across ten Australian breeding establishments, ten years of parental hearing tests barely reduced the frequency; puppies with four normally hearing grandparents were least affected (Sommerlad et al. 2014). Ask for the BAER results of your puppy and their ancestors. A German investigation found no MDR1 variant in Cattle Dogs (Gramer et al. 2011). The British median of 14,0 years rests on only 117 dogs, with a 95-per-cent interval from 13,2 to 15,1 years (McMillan et al. 2024).

A good match for

Experienced, sporty people with time, patience and enthusiasm for real work with a dog, perhaps with a farm, dog sport or herding club. Families with older children can work if someone provides clear guidance.

A poor match for

Unsupported first-time owners, households with young running children and no firm rules, and anyone seeking an uncomplicated city companion.

To assess how much herding dog you can realistically manage, try the breed quiz, while the book “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German) explores the question further. For the first weeks with a young cattle dog, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. The speckled coat makes an impression on magazine-style canvas, with more formats among our dog portraits.
