Old English Sheepdog (Bobtail)

Old English Sheepdog als Wandbild im Stil Minimal, feine Farbzeichnung, Raum: grüner Flur

At a walk, the rear rolls like a bear’s, says the FCI standard, and the bark should be deep enough to drive off any intruder. Beneath all that coat is a compact, muscular country working dog originally used to herd sheep.

FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs), Section 1 Sheepdogs, Standard No. 16 Old English Sheepdog, without working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) males 61 cm and above, females 56 cm and above; type and balance matter more than size
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy median 12.1 years in a UK analysis of 584,734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat abundant, harsh, shaggy rather than straight, without curls; water-repellent undercoat; heavier coat on the hindquarters
Colours in the standard any shade of grey, grizzle or blue on body and hindquarters, with or without white socks; head, neck, forequarters and underside of belly white; brown undesirable

British, with continental ancestors

According to the standard, this is now considered a British breed, though the ancestors are thought to include European herding dogs of Owtcharka and Bergamasco type crossed with British sheepdogs. The nickname Bobtail comes from the docked or naturally short tail once customary. Docking is prohibited in Germany; according to the standard, an undocked tail should have abundant feathering. The FCI definitively recognised the breed in 1963. They share their shaggy appearance with the Bearded Collie, but have a different standard.

An easy-going character with backbone

Biddable and balanced, courageous, loyal and trustworthy, without nervousness or unprovoked aggression: that is the standard’s description. This makes for a composed family dog who reliably announces visitors and then remains friendly.

Endurance rather than haste

The standard requires great endurance, an effortless trot and a very elastic gallop. These dogs need plenty of daily walking, play and mental tasks. Herding training, scent work or calm agility suit them.

The coat takes work

According to the standard, scissors or clippers should not alter the natural outline. In daily life, that means thorough brushing down to the skin several times a week to prevent mats forming, plus keeping paws, the eye area and rear clean. Owners who do not show their dogs can have the coat shortened, but this only partly reduces the workload.

Airways, medication and eyes

With a median lifespan of 12.1 years, the breed is on a par with crossbreeds (12.0 years) in the UK analysis (McMillan et al. 2024). Primary ciliary dyskinesia is known, a condition in which the tiny hairs lining the airways do not work properly. Affected dogs had recurring nasal discharge, coughing and pneumonia. Among European Bobtails, 19 percent carried the responsible genetic change, compared with 7 percent outside Europe (Merveille et al. 2014). MDR1 also matters: in Germany, the altered allele accounted for 4 percent (Gramer et al. 2011). A dominantly inherited variant was found for an inherited eye defect involving cataracts (Stanbury et al. 2023). Genetic tests are available for ciliary dyskinesia and MDR1.

A good fit if

you want a large, good-natured family dog, enjoy the outdoors and make grooming a fixed part of your week.

Less so if

you have little time, live in a small flat without a lift or dislike dirt and hair in the home.

The breed quiz helps you assess whether a dog with so much coat and such an easy-going nature fits your daily life; our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) offers more detail. For puppyhood, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Capture your Bobtail through our dog portraits, for example as a poster in a wooden frame or a magazine cover on canvas.
