Can dogs eat dates?

Datteln auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only pitted and occasionally. Dates are not toxic to dogs in the way raisins are. However, the hard stone can get stuck in the throat or intestines.

Why it gets a yellow rating

The ASPCA lists several species of date palm as non-toxic to dogs, although the true date palm has no entry of its own. The American Kennel Club says dates are not highly toxic in the way grapes are. Although the stones are not toxic, they can chip teeth, cause choking or block the intestines. Dried dates are also high in sugar and calories. They are safe, then, but only without the stone and in small amounts.

What to keep in mind

  • Remove the stone: Cut the date open or buy pitted dates.
  • Cut into small pieces: Dates are sticky. Small pieces are easier to chew.
  • Account for the sugar: According to the AKC, too many dates can upset the stomach because they are high in fibre. Their sugar also affects weight and teeth.
  • Do not confuse them with raisins: Raisins look similar but, according to the ASPCA, can damage the kidneys. Check the ingredients in dried fruit mixes and baked goods carefully.

What if your dog has eaten dates with stones?

If your dog has swallowed one or more dates with their stones, call your vet. Explain roughly how many were eaten, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite or an inability to pass a stool are reasons to go straight to the vet. If the dates were part of a dried fruit mix containing raisins, it is an emergency.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
