Can dogs eat popcorn?

Popcorn auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only plain and only a few pieces. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says popcorn itself is not harmful to dogs. What makes it tasty for us, namely butter, oil, salt and sugar, is the real problem.

Why popcorn gets a yellow rating

According to the AKC, fat from butter and oil can upset the gut and contribute to excess weight. Salt is the other concern: the ASPCA says too much causes excessive thirst and frequent urination, and in severe cases vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors and seizures. Plain air-popped popcorn, by contrast, is suitable as an occasional snack according to the AKC. Partly or wholly unpopped kernels can get stuck between teeth and pose a choking risk.

What to keep in mind

  • Homemade: Only air-popped pieces, without salt, butter or sugar.
  • Remove the kernels: Do not share hard, unpopped kernels.
  • Film night: Keep the bowl out of reach and pick up any pieces that fall.
  • Caramel and chocolate: Sweet popcorn coated in chocolate is not a dog snack.
  • Keep it small: According to the AKC, treats should make up only a small part of daily calories.

What if your dog has emptied the bowl?

According to the AKC, a few salted pieces from the sofa usually cause no harm. If your dog has eaten a whole bowl of salted or buttered popcorn, offer fresh water and monitor them. Call your vet if your dog vomits, drinks unusually large amounts, trembles or seems unsteady. For chocolate popcorn, call straight away.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
