Can dogs eat liver sausage?

Leberwurst auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

A small dollop is fine, but not as a regular snack. Liver sausage is non-toxic but fatty, salty and, depending on the recipe, seasoned. That means no more than a fingertip-sized amount.

Why it gets a yellow rating

Three things make liver sausage tricky. First, the fat: according to the MSD Veterinary Manual, eating table scraps and unsuitable foods is a common risk factor for pancreatitis in dogs. Second, the salt, which the ASPCA says can cause thirst, vomiting and worse in larger amounts. Third, the liver itself. MSD says a liver-only diet can cause vitamin A poisoning in dogs. A dollop is different, but a daily spoonful over time is another matter.

What to keep in mind

  • Read the ingredients: If onions, onion powder or garlic are listed, the sausage is off limits. According to MSD, dried and powdered forms of alliums are particularly dangerous.
  • Tiny amounts: A thin layer is enough to hide a tablet or spread on a lick mat.
  • Count it towards the daily allowance: Liver sausage is high in energy and counts towards the daily ration.
  • Medical history: If your dog has had pancreatitis, MSD recommends low-fat food and low-fat treats. In that case, it is better to leave liver sausage out altogether.

What if your dog has eaten a whole pack?

Expect diarrhoea or vomiting. Offer fresh water and skip the next meal or keep it small. Call your vet if your dog has repeated vomiting, stomach pain, fever or weakness. If the sausage contained onions or garlic, call in any case and take the packaging with you.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
