Catalan Sheepdog (Gos d'Atura Català)

Katalanischer Schäferhund als Wandbild im Stil Minimal, feine Farbzeichnung, Raum: salbeifarbenes Arbeitszimmer

Twice a year, this dog briefly looks like two different animals joined together. The FCI standard describes it precisely: first the front half of the body sheds, then the rear. Until both halves match again, the Gos d’Atura has short hair at the front and long hair behind.

FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs), Section 1 Sheepdogs, Standard No. 87 Gos d'Atura Català (Catalan Sheepdog), without working trial
Country of origin Spain
Size (height at the withers) males 47 to 55 cm, females 45 to 53 cm; more than 3 cm above or below leads to disqualification
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat long, straight or very slightly wavy, rough; abundant undercoat, especially at the rear; beard, moustache, topknot and eyebrows that do not cover the eyes
Colours in the standard appears solid-coloured from a distance: fawn, sandy yellow or grey (silver grey to grey-black), each formed from mixed hairs; black or white patches not allowed

From the Catalan Pyrenees

The standard places the breed’s origins in the Pyrenees of Catalonia. Working the flocks there led these dogs to spread throughout the region’s pastoral areas. The standard describes their work admiringly: they follow the shepherd’s instructions, often make their own decisions and keep the flock together without any animal straying. The FCI definitively recognised the breed in 1954.

Reserved, watchful and devoted

Very reserved, lively and intelligent, with a hardy rural character, devoted selflessly to shepherd and flock: that is the standard’s portrait. They do not approach strangers of their own accord, which can make them seem aloof, and they are very watchful. Within the family, this becomes a loyal companion who first sizes up visitors.

A thinker on four paws

A dog accustomed to making decisions needs tasks. Long walks alone rarely suffice; herding training, tracking, agility or tricks help keep them balanced.

Brushes, beards and double dewclaws

Brush the rough long coat and abundant undercoat thoroughly once a week, much more often during the two-stage moult. Beard and eyebrows collect food remnants and dirt. The standard requires double dewclaws on the hind feet; these nails do not wear down and need regular trimming. The standard allows cropped ears and docked tails only in working dogs; both are prohibited in Germany.

Health: little established knowledge

We found no reliable breed-specific study on either inherited diseases or life expectancy. A large UK owner survey included only ten Catalan Sheepdogs, too few to draw conclusions (Wiles et al. 2017). Ask the breeder for hip X-ray findings and the parents’ health records.

Who lives well with them

Active people and families who enjoy working with their dog, appreciate a watchful, loyal companion and are willing to groom. They can be confused with the Briard, although the standard disqualifies a head resembling either that breed or the Pyrenean Sheepdog.

Who should choose another breed

People expecting an outgoing dog for every visitor, with little time for activities or wanting a coat that needs no work.

The breed quiz helps you assess whether an independent, long-haired herding dog suits you; our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) explores the question in depth. For a new puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Capture your Gos d’Atura through our dog portraits from your own photo or as digital artwork for instant download.
