Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Chesapeake Bay Retriever als Wandbild im Stil Pop-Art, Raum: grüner Flur

When a Chesapeake shakes after swimming, the FCI standard says hardly any water should remain in the coat: it should merely be moist. A harsh, wavy outer coat and oily, woolly undercoat make that possible. The breed was developed to hunt ducks in icy water.

FCI Group 8 (Retrievers, Flushing Dogs, Water Dogs), Section 1 Retrievers, Standard No. 263, with working trial
Country of origin USA
Height at the withers Males 58 to 66 cm, females 53 to 61 cm
Weight Males 29,5 to 36,5 kg, females 25 to 32 kg
Life expectancy Median 11,6 years, only 126 Chesapeakes recorded (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat Short, harsh, slightly wavy outer coat, no more than 4 cm; dense, woolly and oily undercoat
Colours according to the standard Any shade of brown, sedge or deadgrass, solid colour preferred; a small white spot on chest, belly, toes or behind the feet permitted; black disqualifies

Built for ice and tides

The standard tells the origins through the work: developed along Chesapeake Bay for waterfowl hunting in the worst weather, often breaking ice and swimming against wind and current. Size and substance should therefore not be exaggerated. Pale yellowish to amber eyes are typical. An appealing detail: “honourable” working scars are not penalised in the ring.

Cheerful, with protective instincts

Alert, cheerful, intelligent, calm, affectionate and protective: that is the standard’s description. The final trait clearly distinguishes the breed from the Labrador. A Chesapeake often assesses strangers first and takes home seriously; aggressive dogs are disqualified. Socialise early and train calmly and clearly; pressure tends to achieve the opposite.

Water, nose and genuine tasks

The standard considers the dog as capable on land as in water. Dummy training, swimming, tracking or hunting itself provide activity; walking alone is insufficient.

Do not wash out the oils

Oil in the outer coat keeps cold water away from the skin and allows quick drying. Frequent shampooing removes that protection. Weekly brushing suffices, more during shedding; the coat is not clipped.

What studies say about spinal cord and knees

Lifespan data is limited: median 11,6 years in 126 Chesapeakes, compared with 12,0 in crossbreeds (McMillan et al. 2024). Degenerative myelopathy is better documented, causing progressive hind-leg paralysis usually from eight years. In 2009, it was linked to an SOD1 mutation, with the Chesapeake among five breeds studied (Awano et al. 2009). Of 2.344 tested Chesapeakes, 352 carried two copies, although samples were not randomly selected (Zeng et al. 2014). Ask for the parents’ genetic tests. The breed was also among those with cranial cruciate ligament rupture at a young age; affected dogs were heavier on average (Duval et al. 1999).

A Chesapeake suits you if

You feel at home outdoors, enjoy water and want a dog who works with you. Experience with hunting or working dogs helps.

Less suitable if

You expect enthusiastic delight at every visitor, have little training time or cannot tolerate a wet dog in the car.
