Französische Bulldogge, gestromt-weiß, auf einem Parkweg

Large bat ears, a serious face and that grunt when curling up on the sofa: in many cities, the French Bulldog (Bouledogue Français) makes people turn around. Before falling in love, know the figures, because the distinctive build comes at a price.

Origins

The FCI standard traces today’s French Bulldog to crosses made in Paris working-class districts during the 1880s. First the dog of market porters, butchers and coachmen, it later entered high society and artistic circles. Paris’s first breed club formed in 1880, with French kennel-club recognition in 1898.

Temperament

The standard describes a sociable, lively, playful and alert companion. Attached to their people and reluctant to be alone, French Bulldogs have a charming stubbornness that sternness does little to change. Patience and rewards work better.

Exercise and activity

Less exercise is needed than for hunting or herding dogs, but walks, little search games and company are welcome. Weather is decisive: warmth imposes severe limits. Summer life moves into cool mornings and evenings. A car without running air conditioning is dangerous.

Grooming

The short coat is easy to care for. Facial folds and ears need more attention: check regularly and keep clean and dry.

Health

The Royal Veterinary College’s VetCompass programme published the largest breed study in 2021, comparing 2.781 French Bulldogs with 21.850 other dogs from British practices. Bulldogs had increased risk for 20 of 43 common disorders, including brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) with 30,9 times the odds, ear discharge with 14,4 times and skin-fold dermatitis with 11,2 times (O’Neill et al. 2021). The authors recommend breeding towards more moderate conformation. If choosing a French Bulldog, look for open nostrils and silent breathing at rest, and ask for recognised parental exercise tests.

Who does the French Bulldog suit?

People seeking an affectionate, relatively calm indoor companion, who are often home, take health seriously and budget veterinary reserves.

Who is the breed less suited to?

Sporty people wanting a jogging or hiking partner, hot homes without cooling and households leaving the dog alone for long periods.
