Manchester Terrier

Manchester Terrier als Wandbild im Stil Minimal, feine Farbzeichnung, Raum: salbeifarbenes Arbeitszimmer

This dog owes its name to dog shows in pubs. According to the FCI standard, rat-killing reached its peak in the mid-19th century, and the few shows held usually took place in public houses. In Manchester they became weekly events; this terrier soon had dedicated classes there and eventually took the city’s name.

FCI Group 3 (Terriers), Section 1 Large and medium-sized Terriers, Standard No. 71, without working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) ideally males 41 cm, females 38 cm
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat close-fitting, smooth, short and glossy, with a firm texture
Colours in the standard jet black with rich mahogany tan in a specified pattern, colours clearly separated; tan on the outside of the hind legs undesirable, any other colour not permitted

A ratter with Whippet ancestry

The standard suggests there is probably some Whippet in this dog’s ancestry. Bred as ratters, they are still expected to dispatch vermin quickly and efficiently. They do so with an elegant, graceful appearance, compact yet substantial. The small, close relative is the English Toy Terrier; pedigrees contain both breeds (Furrow et al. 2023).

A wedge-shaped head, clear colour boundaries

The skull is long, flat and narrow; the small, almond-shaped eyes are dark and sparkling. V-shaped ears hang close above the eyes. Coat markings matter: mahogany on the muzzle, above the eyes, on throat and legs, black lines on the toes and a black thumbprint directly above the paws, all cleanly separated from the black.

Discerning and devoted

Keen, alert, cheerful and sporting, with discernment and devotion: that is the standard’s description. In everyday life, this is a sensitive companion closely bonded to their person, while retaining a hunting terrier’s independence. Small animals and mouse holes command their full attention.

Exercise, mental work and little grooming

Long walks, sprints in secure areas, agility or scent work provide an outlet. The short, firm coat needs little more than a rubber grooming mitt and offers scant protection from cold.

Genetic tests for heart and urinary tract

Some puppies die without warning, usually before six months old, from inherited heart muscle disease. A study of Manchester Terriers and English Toy Terriers identified a variant in the ABCC9 gene: all 26 affected dogs had two copies, while none of 398 healthy adults did (Furrow et al. 2023). In Manchester Terriers, it accounted for 8 percent of gene copies. For xanthine stones in the urinary tract, the same research group described a variant in the MOCOS gene: 88 of 386 Manchester Terriers tested carried one copy, and 3 carried two (Tate et al. 2021). Both conditions are recessively inherited, so testing the parents offers direct help.

Lymphoma in the Swiss cancer registry

In the Swiss cancer registry, the Manchester Terrier was among the breeds with the highest lymphoma rates: 302 per 100,000 dog-years, compared with an average of 36 across all breeds (Dhein et al. 2024). The range of 98 to 704 reflects the small number of dogs involved. A reliable lifespan figure is lacking.

Who they suit and who they do not

They do well with active people and families with school-age children wanting an elegant, affectionate terrier with a sporting spirit. Anyone seeking a dog without a hunting instinct for a home with rabbits and cats should keep looking.
