Canarian Warren Hound (Podenco Canario)

Podenco Canario als Wandbild im Stil Royal mit kurzer Uniform, Raum: olivgrünes Schlafzimmer

Rabbits in wall crevices, beneath heaps of stones at field edges and in tubular passages through cooled lava: these are the places where the Canarian Warren Hound (Podenco Canario) finds them by nose and hearing, according to the FCI standard. It withstands heat and hunts from dawn to dusk. Bring one home and that stamina comes with it.

Coat Smooth, short and dense
Colours according to the standard Red with white preferred, red ranging from orange to dark red (mahogany); all combinations of these two colours

A tracker among volcanic rocks

According to the standard, it is primarily a tracking dog that should neither bark nor seize prey while working by scent. On the islands, it also hunts with ferrets. Its hunting skills made it indispensable for centuries, and the standard says this alone ensured the breed’s survival.

From Gran Canaria and Tenerife

It is numerous throughout the Canary Islands, particularly on Gran Canaria and Tenerife. The standard regards it as a dog of ancient Egyptian origin, brought to the islands by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians or Egyptians, and gives an age of around 7000 years. That is the standard’s account. A genetic study found clearly distinct populations among five Canarian breeds, with histories consistent with historical sources (Suárez et al. 2013), but did not date the breed. Closely related in type is the Ibizan Hound (Podenco Ibicenco).

Fiery without aggression

Courageous, highly strung, restless, fiery and dynamic, impressive but by no means aggressive: this is the standard’s description, adding unconditional devotion to its master. That energy needs an outlet. Without a task, restlessness quickly becomes chronic stress; with tracking, long hikes on a long line and secure running spaces, it becomes a balanced companion.

A body without reserves

The standard says it lacks subcutaneous fat; ribs, spine and hip bones may be visible, with muscles outlined beneath the skin. This is typical of the breed rather than a sign of hunger; adjust food portions to muscle condition and activity. The short coat almost looks after itself but provides little warmth: a coat is worthwhile on cold, wet days, and a padded bed indoors.

Heartworm and other unwelcome passengers

Breed-specific health studies are rare. Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), transmitted by mosquitoes, has been well studied. On Gran Canaria, prevalence in Podenco Canario was consistently higher than in the rest of the dog population between 2000 and 2008, ranging from 34,65 to 41,6 per cent depending on the year (Montoya-Alonso et al. 2010). The authors attribute this to a lack of prevention and frequent mosquito bites. If you adopt a Podenco from the islands, have it tested for heartworm and other travel-related diseases.

A good fit if

you enjoy spending many hours outdoors, do not view hunting instincts as a training failure and have a securely fenced garden. Dog experience helps considerably.

Less suitable if

you have small pets or cats, want a dog for city cafés and spontaneous off-lead walks, or would need to leave it alone for many hours. A very tentative approach to training will not meet its needs either.
