Can dogs eat apricots?

Aprikosen auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Only the flesh, never the stone. The ASPCA plant database lists the apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca) as toxic to dogs. This refers to its stems, leaves and seeds.

Why apricots get a yellow rating

According to the ASPCA, stems, leaves and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides that can release hydrogen cyanide, particularly when the foliage wilts. The ASPCA lists brick-red mucous membranes, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, panting and shock as signs. It places plums, peaches and cherries in the same group. For peaches, the American Kennel Club (AKC) says the flesh makes a good summer snack once it has been cut completely away from the stone. Because the plant is considered toxic and only part of the fruit is safe, the rating stays yellow.

What to keep in mind

  • Halve and remove the stone: Remove the whole stone, including any fragments attached to the flesh.
  • Dispose of the stones: Do not put them on a compost heap where your dog can find them.
  • A tree in the garden: Pick up windfalls, stones and leaves promptly.
  • No dried apricots: According to the AKC, dried fruit is high in carbohydrates and is often processed with added sugar. Avoid canned fruit in syrup too.
  • Keep portions small: One or two slices are enough for a treat.

What if your dog has swallowed a stone?

Call your vet and explain roughly how many stones your dog ate, whether they were chewed, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. A whole stone can also cause an intestinal blockage. If your dog has trouble breathing, heavy panting, unusually red gums or dilated pupils, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
