Can dogs eat bread?

Brot auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Only a small piece of plain bread, and never raw dough. According to the American Kennel Club, plain white or wheat bread is safe for most dogs. Yeast dough and certain ingredients are dangerous.

Why raw dough is an emergency

Yeast dough keeps rising in the warm, moist stomach. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, it stretches the stomach, while the yeast produces alcohol that enters the bloodstream. This can cause staggering, weakness, low blood sugar, seizures and coma. Pet Poison Helpline also lists a swollen stomach, unproductive retching, weakness and collapse. Pizza dough and sourdough starter pose the same risk.

What to check in baked bread

  • Raisins: Raisin bread and raisin buns are off limits. According to the ASPCA, raisins can damage the kidneys.
  • Garlic: Keep garlic bread and pizza crusts away. Garlic is toxic to dogs.
  • Xylitol: Check the ingredients in sugar-free baked goods. According to the ASPCA, xylitol is dangerous for dogs.
  • Nuts and seeds: Macadamia nuts are toxic, and other nuts are high in fat.
  • Empty calories: According to the AKC, bread provides nothing that good dog food does not already contain.

What if your dog has eaten dough or raisin bread?

If your dog has eaten raw yeast dough, raisin bread or baked goods containing xylitol, call your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately. Be ready to explain what was eaten, roughly how much, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Do not induce vomiting yourself. If your dog only stole a piece of plain bread, keeping an eye on them is enough.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
