Can dogs eat broccoli?

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only in small amounts. Broccoli can go in your dog’s bowl raw or cooked, provided it has no seasoning or oil. A dog’s stomach cannot handle large amounts.

Why broccoli is marked yellow

Broccoli does not appear in the ASPCA plant database, either as toxic or non-toxic. The most detailed assessment comes from the American Kennel Club. Its Chief Veterinary Officer, Jerry Klein, points out that the florets contain isothiocyanates. These substances can irritate some dogs’ stomachs, with effects ranging from mild to serious. The severity varies from dog to dog. Broccoli also provides plenty of fibre and vitamin C and is low in fat. An occasional floret is therefore fine; a bowlful is not.

How to serve broccoli safely

  • Cut it small: According to the AKC, broccoli stalks can obstruct the oesophagus, especially in small dogs.
  • Keep it plain: No butter, oil or seasoning. Onions and garlic are toxic to dogs.
  • Start slowly: Let your dog try a small piece and see how they tolerate it.
  • Finely chopped: The AKC recommends puréed or finely chopped vegetables because they are easier to digest.

What if your dog has eaten too much broccoli?

If your dog has eaten a large serving, it may cause wind, stomach rumbling, diarrhoea or vomiting. Offer water and make the next meal smaller. If diarrhoea persists, your dog vomits repeatedly or seems weak, call your vet. If the broccoli was prepared with onions, garlic or a sauce, mention that on the phone.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
