Can dogs eat fennel?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat fennel. The ASPCA’s plant database lists fennel, including bulb fennel, as non-toxic to dogs.

Why fennel is fine

According to the ASPCA, the risk is low when fennel is eaten as food in small amounts. It does make one explicit exception: avoid concentrated oil. This means fennel essential oil, rather than the bulb in your vegetable drawer. Fennel is therefore a vegetable you can share without concern if your dog likes it.

What to watch out for

  • Cut it into small pieces: The bulb is firm and fibrous. Small pieces or thin slices are easier to eat.
  • Steaming makes it gentler: Cook it until soft for older dogs or sensitive stomachs.
  • No fried dishes or sauces: Do not give your dog fennel from a tray of roasted vegetables containing onions or garlic. According to the ASPCA, these alliums can damage red blood cells.
  • No oil: Fennel essential oil belongs neither in your dog’s food nor within their reach.
  • Take it slowly with new foods: Start with one or two small pieces, then wait.

What if your dog eats too much?

If your dog has demolished a whole bulb, wind or soft stools may follow. Keep an eye on them and make the next meal a little smaller. If they have licked a bottle of fennel oil or eaten a dish with onions, call your vet.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
