Green: safe
Yes, dogs can eat melon. The ASPCA, the American animal welfare organisation with its own poison control centre, lists muskmelon (Cucumis melo), including honeydew, cantaloupe and casaba, as non-toxic to dogs. Watermelon has a separate entry.
Why melon is fine
The fruit contains nothing known to be toxic to dogs. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), cantaloupe consists largely of water, is low in calories and provides fibre and vitamins. On hot days, chilled cubes make a pleasant change from dog biscuits. Even the seeds are considered harmless, although there is no need to include them.
What to watch out for
- Remove the rind: According to the AKC, the hard, fibrous rind can upset the stomach, become lodged in the intestines and cause choking.
- Remove the seeds: It is better to take them out, especially for small dogs.
- Cubes rather than wedges: Bite-sized pieces are chewed rather than gulped down.
- Consider the sugar: Melon is sweet and, according to the AKC, not a good choice for dogs with diabetes.
- Plain: Melon with ham, or in a fruit salad with grapes, should stay on your own plate.
What if your dog eats too much?
Half a melon in one go will upset many dogs’ stomachs. Diarrhoea or wind usually resolves on its own. Make the next meal a little smaller. If your dog has eaten large pieces of rind and then vomits, stops eating or has a hard, tender abdomen, call your vet.
If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
