Bearded Collie

Herding in Scotland and northern England

According to the standard, a similar dog appears in Scottish records around the 16th century, bred in Scotland and northern England to herd sheep. Around five hundred years ago, dogs said also to be ancestors of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog were reportedly left on the Scottish coast and crossed with local sheepdogs. Related British herding dogs include the Collie and the Border Collie.

Cheerful and confident

Alert, lively, confident and active, an even-tempered, intelligent working dog without nervousness or aggression: that is the standard’s description. It explicitly names the bright, enquiring expression as a hallmark. In everyday life, this dog likes to be in the middle of things rather than watching from the sidelines.

The coat is a weekly project

A dense undercoat lies beneath the harsh, shaggy outer coat, and that is where mats form. Brush thoroughly down to the skin at least once a week, much more often during shedding. For showing, the standard forbids any trimming. In everyday life, you can shorten hair between the pads to provide grip on smooth floors.

A herding dog needs tasks

The movement is supple and ground-covering, built for long days on hillsides. Long daily walks plus mental work such as herding practice, agility, obedience or search games keep this dog balanced. Without activity, it finds its own work, quickly turning joggers and children into a flock.

A long life, with one risk to watch

With a median lifespan of 13,9 years, Bearded Collies in McMillan and colleagues’ British analysis lived considerably longer than crossbreeds at 12,0 years. One issue still deserves attention: Addison’s disease, underactivity of the adrenal cortex. In a sample of 635 Bearded Collies, 60 dogs were affected, or 9,4 per cent; the authors estimated heritability at 0,76 (Oberbauer et al. 2002). For a rough sense of scale only, annual prevalence across all dogs in British veterinary practices was 0,06 per cent (Schofield et al. 2021). Common signs included lethargy, loss of appetite and vomiting. Ask the breeder whether Addison’s has occurred in the line.

A good match if

you are active, enjoy including family or friends and set aside time for grooming and training. This dog usually gets on well with children when its activity needs are met.

Better not if

you want an easy-care dog, spend little time outdoors or expect a home without hair and muddy paws. A Bearded Collie brings a piece of meadow home after every rainy walk.
