Cirneco dell'Etna

Cirneco dell'Etna als Wandbild im Stil Minimal, feine Farbzeichnung, Raum: grüner Flur

Across Etna’s lava fields, the dog leaps sure-footedly from rock to rock, seeking rabbits in cracks and ledges. According to the standard, coins, carvings and mosaics show the breed existed in Sicily many centuries before Christ.

To the island with the Phoenicians

The standard suggests ancestors among ancient Egyptian hunting dogs, reportedly brought to Sicily by Phoenicians. Related Mediterranean hunters include the Pharaoh Hound (Kelb tal-Fenek) and the Ibizan Hound (Podenco Ibicenco). The FCI definitively recognised the Cirneco in 1956; the German standard dates from 2019. Italy requires a hunting working trial.

Eyes choose, ears listen, the nose decides

The standard describes the hunt precisely: eyes select the right spot, ears detect movement, but only a dependable sense of smell leads to prey. Wild rabbits are the speciality, alongside other small game and game birds. The standard calls the temperament very strong-willed, unyielding, affectionate and watchful, loyally devoted to their person and an excellent companion.

High fence, long line

A dog who follows rabbits over rubble can jump low fences too. Off-lead exercise works only where wildlife is absent; otherwise a long training line gives freedom. Tracking, mantrailing, search games and running together provide activity. Rabbits or guinea pigs in the same home are a risk.

Short, glossy hair

The semi-long, close coat needs little: a weekly rubber grooming glove and checks of paws and skin after scrub.

What research knows so far

McMillan et al. did not analyse the Cirneco, so no lifespan figure is available. In 2024, a team described two male littermates with retinal degeneration and tremors. The cause was an AMPD2 deletion matching the affected dogs in the rest of the population studied (Murgiano et al. 2024). In Sicily, where leishmaniasis is widespread, infected Cirnechi showed strong Th1 and Th17 immune responses (Martínez-Sáez et al. 2024), alongside blood values the authors interpret as signs of some resistance (Amato et al. 2024). Both teams call for further study, so sandfly protection remains necessary. Ask the breeder about eye results and neurological signs in the line.

A good home with

People who appreciate an elegant, affectionate hunting dog, provide scent work and have a well-fenced garden.
