Rafeiro of Alentejo (Rafeiro do Alentejo)

Rafeiro von Alentejo als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch, Raum: blaues Arbeitszimmer

It is more alert at night than by day. That is what the FCI standard says, fitting a dog whose ancestors accompanied flocks on long migrations between summer mountain pastures and winter grazing on the plains.

Across the country with the flocks

According to the standard, the breed probably descends from Middle Eastern molossoid dogs kept by pastoral tribes. When large flocks moved seasonally between mountains and plains, large dogs accompanied them and spread along the routes. This brought the type to the Alentejo plains, where it has borne its present name since the late 19th century. The FCI granted definitive recognition on 24.11.1954. A neighbour with a similar history is the Spanish Mastiff (Mastín Español).

Calm, confident and dutiful

The standard calls it an excellent watchdog for home and farm and a helpful protector of flocks, taking its duty very seriously. Its expression should be calm and confident, neither aggressive nor fearful; the whole dog large, powerful, rustic, undemanding and calm. Indoors, it is often a composed companion; at the property boundary, a dog that will not let strangers in without you.

Unhurried, but enduring

The standard describes its movement as heavy, slow and rolling. It is not built for cycling, jogging or dog sports. It needs quiet daily walks, a large, securely fenced property and a task that suits it: keeping watch. Because it is particularly attentive at night, expect barking after dark.

An uncomplicated coat

The dense, straight hair needs only a weekly brush, a little more during shedding. Check nails, ears and weight regularly too.

What the data show

In the Portuguese pet registry, which recorded 278.116 dog deaths from 2013 to 2022, life expectancy from birth was 8,03 years for 3.486 Rafeiros and 9,48 for crossbreeds (Geraz et al. 2024). Owners reported the breeds themselves, and Portuguese figures are generally below British ones. A genomic study found the lowest inbreeding among Portuguese breeds in the Rafeiro, although based on only eight dogs (Blaschikoff et al. 2026). No study of hip dysplasia prevalence exists for the breed, but you should still see the parents’ hip results.

It suits you if

you want a calm, very large guardian for farm, home and animals, have dog experience, live in the countryside and can offer space, time and composed guidance. Its mountain compatriots are the Estrela Mountain Dog (Cão da Serra da Estrela) and the Castro Laboreiro Dog (Cão de Castro Laboreiro).

Choose another breed if

you live in a city, want a sporting companion, need absolute silence at night or are getting your first dog.
