Saint Miguel Cattle Dog (Cão Fila de São Miguel)

Cão Fila de São Miguel als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch, Raum: terrakottafarbenes Wohnzimmer

It deliberately bites low. When driving dairy cows, the Saint Miguel Cattle Dog (Cão Fila de São Miguel) places its teeth very low down, according to the FCI standard, keeping the udder safe. Only with straying animals may it bite higher. A dog with such precisely tuned work also needs a clear task in family life.

The cattle dog of the Azores

Its home is São Miguel in the Atlantic, where it is also called the cow dog. According to the standard, it has been documented since the early 19th century. The FCI recognised it provisionally in 1995 and definitively in 2007. A genomic study could not confidently place it in any major breed group; the authors found clearly shared DNA segments with the Great Dane (Deutsche Dogge) and the Boxer. There were reportedly around 1.742 dogs in 2025 (Blaschikoff et al. 2026).

Assertive with outsiders, responsive at home

The standard calls it a particularly good cattle driver and also a good guardian of property and people. With strangers, it shows a strong, assertive temperament; with its owner, it is obedient, highly intelligent and receptive. It therefore learns quickly, including unwanted lessons. Socialise it early with visitors, unfamiliar dogs and everyday noise.

A worker without a pasture

Without cattle, it needs alternative tasks. Long hikes, tracking, retrieving with breaks and calmly developed obedience provide activity. According to the standard, its gait is easy and springy, with a slight roll of the hindquarters.

Short coat, cropped ears?

The short, harsh coat is quickly maintained with a rubber grooming mitt once a week. The standard still describes round-cropped ears and a docked tail in countries without a ban. In Germany, docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act. There, the Fila has hanging triangular ears and its full, slightly curved tail.

Figures from the register

Portugal’s pet register analysed 278.116 dogs that died between 2013 and 2022. For 1.553 Filas, life expectancy at birth was 7,81 years, compared with 9,48 for crossbreeds (Geraz et al. 2024). Portuguese figures are generally lower than British ones, and owners reported breed without pedigree verification. We found no studies on hips, eyes or inherited diseases in this breed, so ask for the parents’ X-ray results.

Who it suits

Experienced, calm rural people seeking a medium-sized, powerful dog keen to work and who enjoy training together. A farm with animals is ideal; a large, secure property is the minimum.

Who it is less suitable for

First-time owners, homes with constantly changing guests, city flats and anyone wanting a dog that warmly welcomes every stranger.

A mainland cousin from northern Portugal is the Castro Laboreiro Dog (Cão de Castro Laboreiro). Our breed quiz checks whether a cattle dog with a guardian’s heart suits you; our book explores it more thoroughly: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For the first weeks with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Find your brindle Fila in our dog portraits from your own photo or as a magazine cover on canvas.
