Samoyed (Samoiedskaïa Sabaka)

The smile is written into the standard. Upturned lip corners and almond-shaped eyes create the typical expression the FCI standard explicitly calls the Samoyed’s (Samoiedskaïa Sabaka) “smile”. Fittingly, it includes a sentence rarely read in a breed standard: unsuitable as a watchdog.

FCI Group 5 (Spitz and primitive types), Section 1 Nordic Sledge Dogs, Standard No. 212, without working trial
Country of origin Russia (patronage: Nordic Kennel Union)
Size (height at the withers) ideal: males 57 cm, females 53 cm, each with 3 cm tolerance above or below
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy median 13,1 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat double: short, soft undercoat and longer, harsh, straight outer hair, mane around neck and shoulders
Colours in the standard pure white, cream or white with a few biscuit markings; base colour always white

Origins

The standard traces the name to the Samoyedic peoples of northern Russia and Siberia. Their dogs in the north were pure white and gentle; they hunted, pulled sleds and even slept in their people’s tents. British zoologist Ernest Kilbourne Scott brought the first dogs to England in 1889, where the first standard was drawn up in 1909.

Temperament

Friendly, open, cheerful and lively, very sociable and with very little hunting instinct, says the standard. It loves company, both human and canine. Left alone, it quickly becomes loud or creative.

Exercise and activities

As a sled dog, it is built for endurance. Long walks, dog-powered sports, canicross or hiking delight it, preferably in cold weather. In summer, walks belong in the cool morning and evening hours.

Grooming

The white double coat repels dirt better than you might think but takes work. Brush thoroughly several times weekly, daily during moulting when it sheds large quantities of undercoat. We advise against clipping, even in summer.

Health

In a Swedish analysis of around 182.000 insured dogs, the Samoyed was among the four breeds with the highest frequency of diabetes mellitus (Fall et al. 2007). Excessive drinking, frequent urination and weight loss despite appetite are warning signs. Another issue is the eyes: drainage-angle malformations can lead to glaucoma. An Australian study of 77 Samoyeds showed puppy drainage-angle examinations agreed with later findings in 90 per cent of cases (Turner et al. 2024). Ask for the parents’ eye results.

Who suits the Samoyed?

Active, sociable people and families who are home often, enjoy grooming and like being outdoors in every weather.

Who is less suited?

Households where the dog stays alone for long periods, poorly soundproofed rented flats and anyone seeking a watchdog.

The breed quiz shows whether such a sociable sled dog suits you; our book explores further: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For the first weeks with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Its white coat makes a striking picture: explore our dog portraits from your own photo or a poster in a wooden frame.
