Can dogs eat parsnips?

Pastinaken auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

At most, a small cooked piece, because a reliable assessment is lacking. Neither the ASPCA poison database nor the American Kennel Club includes parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) in the lists reviewed here. It is therefore marked yellow.

What is known about parsnips

Wild parsnip contains furocoumarins, substances that make skin sensitive to sunlight. A case series from Germany, published in BMC Veterinary Research in 2022, describes nine horses with inflammation in areas of light-coloured skin and eye irritation. They had eaten hay containing large amounts of wild parsnip, including roots, stems and seeds. This study provides no evidence about dogs or cooked parsnips from the kitchen. Yellow therefore means: limited evidence, so caution is sensible.

What to watch for

  • Avoid wild parsnip: Do not let your dog eat plants growing beside paths or in meadows.
  • Risk of confusion: Under English names such as “Poison Parsnip” and “Cow Parsnip”, the ASPCA lists two wild members of the carrot family as toxic to dogs: spotted water hemlock, which can cause seizures and death, and a species of hogweed that makes the skin sensitive to light.
  • If you offer any: Only a small piece of cooked parsnip without butter, salt or onions.
  • No mash from the family table: Parsnip mash usually contains butter, cream and seasoning.

What if your dog has eaten parsnip?

If your dog has stolen a piece of cooked parsnip from a plate, simply monitor them. Call your vet if vomiting or diarrhoea does not settle. If your dog has chewed a wild plant from the carrot family outdoors, call immediately, because water hemlock is very difficult to distinguish reliably from harmless species. A photo of the plant will help your vet.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
