Can dogs eat pumpkin seeds?

Kürbiskerne auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

If offered, only a few and completely plain. The ASPCA’s plant database lists squash-family plants such as Hubbard squash and courgette as non-toxic to dogs. It has no specific entry for pumpkin seeds.

Why pumpkin seeds get a yellow rating

The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes pumpkin flesh as healthy for dogs. None of the specialist sources checked comments on the seeds: neither the ASPCA nor the AKC, the MSD Veterinary Manual or the Pet Poison Helpline. Almost all the advice available online comes from guidance websites without reliable evidence. Here, yellow therefore means they are not known to be toxic, but have not been assessed either.

What to watch out for

  • Unsalted: Roasted snack seeds are often salted. According to the ASPCA, too much salt can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, trembling and seizures.
  • Unseasoned: No garlic or onion. According to the ASPCA, these alliums damage red blood cells.
  • No mixes: Snack mixes and trail mix may contain raisins or macadamia nuts.
  • Pumpkin flesh as an alternative: Cooked, peeled pumpkin flesh is the better-supported choice.

What if your dog gets hold of a bag?

If your dog has eaten a larger amount, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea or stomach pain. If the seeds were salted or seasoned, call your vet and explain what was eaten, roughly how much and when. Seek veterinary attention if your dog seems weak, trembles or drinks unusually large amounts.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
