Finnish Lapphund (Suomenlapinkoira)

Finnischer Lapphund als Wandbild im Stil Ölgemälde, Raum: helle Landhausküche

Only in 1945 did the Finnish Kennel Club write a standard for the Lapponian herding dog; two more name changes followed. By then, its ancestors had herded and guarded Sámi reindeer for centuries.

FCI Group 5 (Spitz and primitive types), Section 3 Nordic Watchdogs and Herders, Standard No. 189, without working trial
Country of origin Finland
Height at the withers Ideal males 49 cm, females 44 cm, tolerance 3 cm; type more important than size
Weight Not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy Median 13,8 years in a British analysis (McMillan et al. 2024), based on 105 dogs with 23 deaths
Coat Abundant, males with a rich mane; long, straight, harsh outer coat; fine, dense undercoat required
Colours according to the standard All colours permitted, base colour must predominate; other colours possible on head, neck, chest, underside, legs and tail

Three names in fifty years

The Lapponian herding dog became Lapphund in 1967 and Finnish Lapphund in 1993. Type stabilised in the 1970s; today the standard places the breed throughout Finland, mainly as a household dog. Definitive FCI recognition dates from 1955. The closest relative is the Swedish Lapphund (Svensk Lapphund), while the breed remaining more closely tied to reindeer work is the Lapponian Herder (Lapinporokoira).

Gentle expression, alert mind

Bright, courageous, calm and eager to learn, peaceful and trustworthy: a temperament well suited to first-time trainers. Guarding origins show in announcing unfamiliar things.

A herding dog wants something to do

The standard describes agile, quick work, easily changing from trot to gallop. Hiking, herding classes, obedience or trick training offer suitable challenges. Dense coat makes summer heat tiring; move long outings to cooler hours.

Mane, breeches and undercoat

Absence of undercoat is a fault under the standard, so shedding produces plenty of hair. Brush to the skin daily then to prevent undercoat matting behind ears and on breeches.

13,8 years and other study findings

McMillan et al.’s median of 13,8 years exceeds crossbreeds’ 12,0, but rests on only 23 deceased dogs. Swedish X-ray screening found grade C to E hip dysplasia in 30,7 per cent of 1.577 young Finnish Lapphunds, and elbow dysplasia in 5,6 per cent (Engdahl et al. 2026). Late-onset retinal degeneration was mapped to chromosome 9, probably corresponding to prcd-PRA (Aguirre-Hernández et al. 2007). For fatal Pompe storage disease, 5 of 95 healthy Finnish Lapphunds carried the variant (Seppälä et al. 2013). Genetic tests exist for both eye and metabolic concerns; ask for them and the parents’ hip results.

Made for you if

You seek a friendly, composed companion who enjoys learning and look forward to walks in any weather.

Not your dog if

Grooming feels burdensome, summer shade is scarce or you want a dog who never gives voice.

To see whether a calm herding Spitz suits you, try the breed quiz, with a thorough guide in “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). The free Puppy Starter Pack helps through the first weeks. Mane and gentle eyes make a lovely magazine cover on canvas, or choose a file as a digital artwork.
