Hygen Hound (Hygenhund)

Hygenhund als Wandbild im Stil Pop-Art, Raum: cremefarbenes Wohnzimmer

Red-brown with black shading, black and tan or white mottled: the Hygen Hound (Hygenhund) has three quite different coats. What stays the same is the serious, calm expression required by the FCI standard.

FCI Group 6 (Scent hounds and related breeds), Section 1.2 Medium-sized Hounds, Standard No. 266, with working trial
Country of origin Norway
Height at the withers Males 50 to 58 cm (ideal 54 cm), females 47 to 55 cm (ideal 51 cm)
Weight Not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy No reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat Straight, preferably slightly harsh, dense, glossy and not too short; slightly fuller on thighs and tail
Colours according to the standard Red-brown or yellow-red, often shaded black, with or without white; black and tan, usually with white; white with red-brown or yellow-red patches and ticking, or black-and-tan markings; colours clearly separated

Compact for long days

Medium-sized, powerful and compact, rectangular with a firm topline: the standard’s description. The chest is long and deep, about half the height at the withers, with especially well-developed rear ribs. A slightly wedge-shaped head, muzzle rather short than long. Movement should be free and ground-covering, parallel viewed front and rear.

A Norwegian scent hound

Norway is the origin; the Norwegian Kennel Club wrote the 1999 original in English. It names the role simply scent hound and requires a working trial. No breed history is given. From the same country come the Halden Hound (Haldenstøver) and the Norwegian Hound (Dunker), both also in Section 1.2.

A serious look, an independent mind

No temperament chapter exists, only the eye expression is described. Aggressive or excessively fearful dogs are disqualified. As a scent hound, the dog was bred to follow game trails independently and persistently. Expect calm indoors and rapid separation outdoors once the nose finds something.

Everyday exercise and grooming

Plan at least two long daily outings plus tracking or mantrailing on a long line. Dense, slightly harsh coat needs only weekly brushing. Hair between toes and pads merits inspection after snow or mud. Check the thin, soft ears after every woodland day.

A skeletal disease in puppies

No lifespan figure exists: McMillan and colleagues list but cannot analyse the breed for lack of data. A Norwegian case series described 19 dogs with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia from ten litters, including eleven Hygen Hounds and six Dunkers. The bone ends at joints ossify poorly; most dogs became lame at five to eight months, often severely. The authors suspect recessive inheritance and call the disease rare (Rørvik et al. 2008). Ask whether lame youngsters have occurred in the line.

Who the Hygen Hound suits

Hunters and very active people spending ample time outside and enjoying nose work. Difficult for homes expecting off-lead field exercise, long working days without care and neighbourhoods troubled by canine voices. With distance and tasks, a calm partner with remarkable stamina.

To see whether a Norwegian scent hound suits you, try the breed quiz; our book explores the question further: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For starting life with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Whichever of the three colours shares your home, capture it among our dog portraits from your own photo or as a poster in a wooden frame.
