Siberian Husky

Siberian Husky als Hundeportrait auf Leinwand mit Rahmen

Watching a Husky trot easily across a meadow shows exactly what the breed is built for. The FCI standard describes a sled dog able to pull lighter loads at moderate speed over great distances, with flowing, seemingly effortless movement. That endurance remains even when there is no sled anywhere in sight.

FCI Group 5 (Spitz and primitive types), Section 1 Nordic Sledge Dogs, Standard No. 270, without working trial
Country of origin USA
Size (height at the withers) males 53.5 to 60 cm, females 50.5 to 56 cm
Weight males 20.5 to 28 kg, females 15.5 to 23 kg
Life expectancy median 11.9 years in a UK analysis of 584,734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat double and medium length, soft, dense undercoat, straight outer coat lying somewhat close
Colours in the standard all shades of black, grey, agouti, sable, red (red fawn) and white, solid or with markings and patterns; merle and brindle lead to disqualification

Origins

The name points to Siberia, but the FCI lists the USA as the country of origin. The standard gives sled dog as the purpose. Build and proportions should show a balance of power, speed and endurance. A Husky should never look as heavy as a freighting dog or as delicate as a racing dog.

Temperament

The standard describes a friendly, gentle, alert and outgoing dog. These dogs show no possessive watchdog qualities, are not overly suspicious of strangers and are not aggressive towards other dogs. According to the standard, intelligence, trainability and eagerness make them pleasant companions and willing workers, provided they have work.

Exercise and activities

Endurance is central. Long daily distances and dog-powered sports such as canicross suit them; running beside a bicycle must wait until adulthood. Off-lead freedom is often limited, and an escape-proof garden is part of the setup. In warm weather, move training to cooler hours.

Grooming

The double coat needs weekly brushing. During shedding, large amounts of undercoat come out; the standard expressly calls its absence at that time normal. The standard permits trimming only of whiskers and around the paws.

Health

The eyes deserve attention. In a study of patients from four US university clinics, Huskies with cataracts first attended at an average age of 3.5 years, compared with 9.5 years in other breeds. Lens opacity was considered inherited in 84 percent of Huskies (Uhl et al. 2021). Eye examinations of the parents and checks for your own dog are therefore sensible. The standard also emphasises that a Husky in proper condition carries no excess weight.

Who does the Siberian Husky suit?

Sporty people outdoors for long periods every day, keen on dog-powered sports and relaxed about an independent dog.

Who are they less suited to?

First-time owners without time for daily training, anyone wanting a watchdog and households where the dog spends many hours alone.
