Can dogs have olive oil?

Olivenöl auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

A drizzle is fine, but keep it at that. Olive oil is non-toxic. However, it is pure fat, and a dog’s stomach can tolerate only a little.

Why olive oil gets a yellow rating

We did not find a specialist source that specifically addresses olive oil for dogs. What fat can do in general, however, is clear. Pet Poison Helpline says fatty table scraps are not a poisoning issue in the strict sense, but can cause anything from mild vomiting and diarrhoea to severe, fatal pancreatitis. It specifically mentions butter and oils. Cornell University’s animal hospital also warns that overly rich food can irritate the pancreas. Only a little, then, which is why the rating is yellow.

What to keep in mind

  • Weight: Oil is pure fat. It is better left out for overweight dogs.
  • Dogs with a medical history: If your dog has had pancreatitis, do not add oil without consulting your vet.
  • Breeds: According to Pet Poison Helpline, Miniature Schnauzers are particularly susceptible.
  • Pans and leftovers: Dogs should not have cooking fat, marinades or leftover oil containing garlic or onions.

What if your dog has consumed a lot of oil?

Call your vet if your dog has knocked over a bottle and licked up the oil, or licked out a frying pan. Diarrhoea can start quickly. According to Pet Poison Helpline, vomiting after a fatty meal often begins only 1 to 4 days later, along with stomach pain, poor appetite and lethargy. Watch your dog closely during this time.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
