Beagle-Harrier

Beagle-Harrier als Wandbild im Stil Pop-Art, Raum: sandfarbenes Schlafzimmer

The name sounds English, but the FCI lists France as the country of origin, and the valid standard is written in French. At 45 to 50 centimetres, the Beagle-Harrier stands well above the Beagle and reaches the Harrier’s lower size limit.

FCI Group 6 (Scent hounds and related breeds), Section 1.2 Medium-sized Hounds, Standard No. 290, with working trial
Country of origin France
Height at the withers 45 to 50 cm (no distinction by sex)
Weight Not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy No reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat Fairly thick, not too short, smooth
Colours according to the standard Tricolour (fawn with black mantle and white), with strong, pale or black-shaded tan markings; grey tricolour and white-grey dogs are not penalised for colour alone

A scent hound without a history chapter

The October 2023 standard has no historical summary. It describes a harmonious, balanced, noble, agile and powerful dog of medium proportions, classed among medium-sized scent hounds. Traces of the origins remain: because a grey Harrier exists, grey dogs cannot be penalised for colour alone. An inwardly rolled ear is a fault because it suggests an infusion of French blood. For the smaller namesake, see the Beagle.

Nose down, mind on the trail

The standard has no separate temperament section. The expression should be lively and intelligent; timid or sluggish dogs are faulty, aggressive or excessively fearful dogs disqualified. This is a scent hound bred to give voice on the trail, often alongside other dogs. In everyday life, such a type usually gets on with fellow dogs, but a fresh scent quickly drowns out recall. Waiting alone at home is unwelcome.

Activity for stamina and nose

The FCI requires a working trial, making this a working hunting dog. Without hunting, provide long daily outings, laid trails, mantrailing or woodland search games. A long training line is essential initially. A dog left only to run in the garden becomes loud or highly inventive.

Short coat, ears to watch

The fairly thick, smooth coat is undemanding: brush weekly and check for ticks and grass awns after outings. Regularly inspect the fairly short ears, lying flat against the head. Watch the waistline too, keeping the dog lean and mobile.

Health: little data

We found no reliable study of Beagle-Harrier lifespan or typical diseases. The breed is absent from McMillan and colleagues’ large British analysis and appears only incidentally in Europe PMC and PubMed, for example in an Italian birth-weight survey. This proves neither exceptional illness nor exceptional health; the breed simply has not been systematically studied. Figures for Beagles or Harriers cannot be transferred. Ask the breeder about the parents’ hip X-rays and eye results, plus the grandparents’ ages and causes of death.

For hunters and scent enthusiasts

The breed suits people who hunt or seriously pursue nose work, want a sturdy, medium-sized short-haired dog and enjoy many hours outside. Hunting-dog experience makes much easier.

Less suitable for

People wanting off-lead freedom in the park, spending long days away or seeking a breed with puppies readily available without waiting.

To see whether a scent hound with such a strong tracking drive suits you, try the breed quiz, with more background in our book “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For a young scent hound at home, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. The tricolour markings look good on a poster in a wooden frame, with more ideas among our dog portraits.
