Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffordshire Bullterrier als Wandbild im Stil Royal mit Uniform, Raum: warmes Arbeitszimmer

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s FCI standard contains a sentence many would not expect of such a muscular terrier: highly intelligent and affectionate, especially with children. Right beside it are indomitable courage and tenacity. Both belong to the breed, and both matter before a Staffie joins you.

FCI Group 3 (Terriers), Section 3 Bull type Terriers, Standard No. 76, without working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) desirable 35.5 to 40.5 cm, depending on weight
Weight males 12.7 to 17 kg, females 11 to 15.4 kg
Life expectancy median 12.0 years in a UK analysis of 584,734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat smooth, short and close-fitting
Colours in the standard white, red, fawn, black or blue, each also with white; any shade of brindle, also with white; black and tan and liver not permitted

Origins

The FCI standard names Great Britain as the country of origin and places the breed among bull-type terriers. The FCI definitively recognised the breed in 1954; a revised standard appeared in September 2026. The breed is widespread in Great Britain: in a large lifespan analysis, it was second only to the Labrador in numbers (McMillan et al. 2024).

Temperament

Courageous, fearless and completely reliable, says the standard. These dogs seek physical closeness, love play and rough-and-tumble and are strongly attached to their people. With other dogs, they need good socialisation and guidance preventing early conflicts from developing. A VetCompass study, incidentally, found no increased risk of an aggression diagnosis compared with other dogs (Pegram et al. 2020).

Exercise and activities

Strong and enduring, but no endless-distance runner. One to two hours of exercise, tug games with rules, searching games and trick training provide satisfying activity. A sturdy lead and good lead training are essential with this strength.

Grooming

The short coat needs little: a weekly session with a rubber grooming mitt. Keep an eye on skin and paws.

Health

The VetCompass study compared 1,304 Staffordshire Bull Terriers with over 21,000 other dogs. Odds were increased for 4 of 36 common disorders, most markedly seizures (odds ratio 2.06). They were lower for 5 disorders, especially patellar luxation (odds ratio 0.15). Overall, the authors found no evidence of more health problems than in other dogs (Pegram et al. 2020). A characteristic inherited disease is L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria, a metabolic brain disorder; affected dogs first showed signs at an average of 12 months (Shea et al. 2016). It is recessively inherited, so testing the parents can prevent affected puppies.

Who does the Staffordshire Bull Terrier suit?

People wanting an affectionate, robust, playful companion and willing to train consistently, including at dog training classes. Some German federal states impose restrictions on Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Before buying, ask the state and your local authority what applies to you.

Who are they less suited to?

Households where the dog spends much time alone, and anyone unable to hold a powerful dog securely on a lead.
