Make colouring a little moment of calm

There's something soothing about cat pictures. Perhaps it's the rounded shapes, or the soft fur that lends itself so well to layers of coloured pencil. The Maine Coon with its long mane is a picture for anyone who enjoys working with several shades of brown. The British Shorthair looks most typical in blue-grey, but can of course be orange or tabby too. The Ragdoll's pale markings come to life through the contrast between a light body and a darker face.

The British Shorthair is the easiest starting point for children, with large areas and clear lines. The Maine Coon and Ragdoll have more background, plants and patterns, making them suitable for older children and adults who want to unwind in the evening.

Paper and pencils

For coloured pencils, 80 g/m² printer paper is enough. With felt-tip pens, choose thicker paper, from around 120 g/m². To create soft fur, build up several thin layers of coloured pencil, working from light to dark. Print the file at actual size so everything fits neatly on the page.

When your own cat is the model

If you have a cat, it's worth taking a close look: what colour are the eyes really? How many stripes are on the tail? Children discover details they had never noticed before. And the cat gets what cats love most: attention without anyone wanting anything from them.

Colouring for adults

These cat pictures aren't just for children. Many adults use colouring pages for a peaceful half-hour in the evening: phone away, tea beside them, filling one area after another. The fine patterns on the Maine Coon's and Ragdoll's cushions and blankets are made for just that. Fineliners and soft coloured pencils work well together if you want to outline shapes and gently fill them in.
