Can dogs drink coffee?

Red: toxic

No, dogs must not drink coffee. Caffeine belongs to the methylxanthines, the same group of substances that makes chocolate toxic to dogs.

Why coffee is dangerous

According to the ASPCA, methylxanthines can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, panting, excessive thirst, increased urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures and even death in pets. The more caffeine, the greater the risk. The MSD Veterinary Manual explains that caffeine stimulates the nervous system and speeds up the heart, and that dogs vary widely in their sensitivity. Pet Poison Helpline says dogs appear to be more sensitive to caffeine than humans.

Where caffeine is found

  • Coffee beans, ground coffee and used grounds: According to Pet Poison Helpline, unused ground coffee and beans can cause severe poisoning. Coffee pads and capsules also contain ground coffee.
  • Tea, cola and energy drinks: Tea bags and caffeinated supplements are also sources.
  • Coffee drinks with cream: Sweet, creamy drinks are particularly tempting to dogs and often contain extra espresso shots.
  • Chocolate-covered coffee beans: These combine caffeine with chocolate.

What if your dog has had coffee?

According to Pet Poison Helpline, one or two licks from a cup do not cause poisoning in most dogs. Keep an eye on your dog nevertheless. If your dog has eaten beans, ground coffee, used grounds or coffee pads, or consumed a whole drink, call your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately. Be ready to explain what was eaten, roughly how much, when it happened and how much your dog weighs, and take the packaging. Do not induce vomiting yourself or give home remedies.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
