Yes, your dog can eat plain salad leaves. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce and rocket contain nothing that can seriously harm a dog.
Why lettuce is fine
According to the AKC, lettuce is mostly water and has very few calories. It provides a little fibre and beta-carotene, but not much else. As a crunchy bite between meals, it is a light choice for dogs that need to watch their weight. The ASPCA’s plant database has no specific entry for lettuce, so this assessment relies on the AKC.
What to watch out for
- Only the leaves: A prepared salad is different. According to the ASPCA, onions, garlic and chives can damage red blood cells, while dressing adds fat and salt.
- Wash thoroughly: Because of possible germs such as E. coli or Listeria, the AKC recommends washing lettuce carefully.
- Cut it into small pieces: Large leaves are fibrous and hard to digest. Chopping them makes things easier.
- Spinach and kale: These are not lettuce. According to the AKC, they contain oxalic acid and other substances that can put a strain on the kidneys and stomach.
What if your dog eats too much lettuce?
According to the AKC, too many greens can cause diarrhoea. This usually passes on its own; provide water and keep the next meal simple. If your dog has eaten salad with onions, garlic or dressing, the amount matters. Call your vet, explain what was in the salad and roughly how much was eaten, and give your dog’s weight.
If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
