Can dogs eat xylitol?

Red: toxic

No, xylitol is toxic to dogs. The sugar substitute, also called birch sugar, is found in many sugar-free products. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, it can cause severely low blood sugar in dogs and, less commonly, liver failure.

Why xylitol is dangerous

In most mammals, xylitol has little effect on insulin. In dogs, MSD says it quickly releases large amounts of insulin, causing blood sugar to plummet. How it damages the liver is not yet fully understood. Pet Poison Helpline stresses that xylitol content varies widely, even between flavours of the same chewing gum brand.

Where xylitol is found

According to MSD and Pet Poison Helpline, it occurs in sugar-free chewing gum, sweets, mints, peanut butter, baked goods, puddings and jam, as well as toothpaste, mouthwash, chewable tablets, vitamins, nasal spray and liquid medicines. If the packaging says “sugar-free”, read the ingredients.

What signs should you look for?

According to MSD, low blood sugar can begin within 30 minutes, although with chewing gum it may take hours. Typical signs include vomiting, weakness, staggering, lethargy, seizures and coma. Signs of liver damage often appear only after 24 to 48 hours, such as yellowing and a tendency to bleed.

What if your dog has eaten xylitol?

Leave immediately or call an emergency veterinary service, even if your dog still seems well. Be ready to explain which product it was (ideally with the packaging), roughly how much was eaten, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Do not induce vomiting yourself; that decision belongs to the vet.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
