Can dogs eat mozzarella?

Mozzarella auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only a small piece now and then. Mozzarella is not toxic. Like all dairy products, however, it can cause diarrhoea because, according to the ASPCA, dogs produce little lactase, the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar.

Why mozzarella is marked yellow

Mozzarella is one of the milder cheeses. Veterinary-reviewed information from PetMD describes it as suitable in moderation because it contains less lactose and saturated fat than many other cheeses, especially the reduced-fat version. Still, it remains a dairy product with fat and calories. According to PetMD, treats should make up no more than ten per cent of the daily food allowance in total. That is why mozzarella is marked yellow: safe, but only a little.

What to watch for

  • Small cubes: Tiny pieces are enough as rewards during training.
  • No pizza or bakes: These often contain onions, garlic and a lot of salt, all of which the ASPCA warns against.
  • No blue cheese: According to PetMD, it contains roquefortine and is toxic to dogs. Do not leave cheeseboards unattended.
  • Sensitive stomach: If your dog is prone to diarrhoea or has had pancreatitis, it is best to avoid cheese altogether.

What if your dog has eaten a whole ball?

Expect loose stools or wind. Offer water and make the next meal smaller. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, eating large amounts of inappropriate food is a common trigger for pancreatitis. If your dog vomits, has abdominal pain or a fever, or stops eating, call your vet.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
