The FCI standard dates the first mention of large molossian dogs in the army of the Armenian king Tigran II to the 1st century BC. These dogs mark the start of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog’s (Kavkazskaïa Ovtcharka) history. Its present form is much younger: deliberate selection began in the Soviet Union around 1920.

From Caucasian pastures to the steppe
The standard places its range from the mountain pastures of the Caucasus to the steppes of southern Russia. It guarded cattle and sheep herds and farmsteads against predators and intruders. The FCI definitively recognised it on 23.08.1984. Similar in type is the Central Asian Shepherd Dog, while a Russian herding dog is the South Russian Shepherd Dog.
A guardian with its own judgement
Balanced, active, confident, fearless and independent, yet affectionate and devoted to its owner: that is the standard’s description of this excellent watchdog. In daily life, it decides for itself who enters its territory; visitors need your clear guidance. Early, calm familiarisation with strangers and everyday noises is essential; harshness does not make it easier to handle. Some German states have specific rules for very large, heavy dogs, so ask the state or municipality before buying.
Trotting rather than speed
The trot is its typical gait, according to the standard. Long, steady walks on a lead and securely fenced territory to watch suit it better than dog sports or dog parks.
A coat for every weather
At least five centimetres of outer hair and a dense undercoat protect against cold and wet. Thorough weekly brushing usually suffices; during moulting, wool comes out in clumps and daily brushing is needed. The standard says ears are traditionally cropped in the country of origin, with natural ears considered equal. In Germany, docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act. Its ears therefore stay as they grew.
What the small sample tells us
In the large British lifespan analysis, the median was 5,4 years, compared with 12,0 for crossbreeds. The risk of death was 2,44 times higher (McMillan et al. 2024). However, this rests on only 52 dogs, 22 of which had died. Treat the figure as a warning signal rather than a prediction for your puppy. None of eight Caucasian Shepherd Dogs tested in Romania carried the risk variant in the degenerative myelopathy gene (Cocostîrc et al. 2023). Ask the breeder for both parents’ hip and elbow X-ray results.
A good match if
you already have experience with large, independent dogs, provide calm, consistent guidance and have a large, well-secured property where a guardian really has work to do.
Less suitable if
you rent in a city, often have visitors or would struggle with over 50 kilos of dog on a lead.
