Can dogs drink milk?

Milch auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Only occasionally, and only a sip. According to the ASPCA, dogs have little lactase, the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar. Milk can therefore cause diarrhoea and stomach discomfort.

Why milk gets a yellow rating

Puppies digest their mother’s milk without difficulty. According to the American Kennel Club, adult dogs produce widely varying amounts of the necessary enzyme, and some produce very little. Typical effects include soft stools, gas, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea. The AKC says a large amount of milk can upset even dogs without an intolerance. Milk also supplies fat and sugar, which can lead to weight gain over time.

What to keep in mind

  • Water first: Fresh water is your dog’s drink. Milk is at most a small extra.
  • Test first: Many people discover their dog cannot tolerate milk only after the first sip. If even a little causes symptoms, choose another reward.
  • No bowlfuls to lap up: Stick to a small amount left in the bowl, rather than a whole cup.
  • No cocoa: Cocoa and chocolate milk contain methylxanthines, which the ASPCA says are toxic to dogs.

What if your dog has drunk too much milk?

This usually becomes apparent a few hours later as diarrhoea or gas. Offer water, give a small, light meal and let your dog outside more often. Call your vet if diarrhoea persists, your dog vomits repeatedly or seems lethargic. For cocoa or chocolate milk, do not wait: call immediately.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
