Can dogs eat peanut butter?

Erdnussbutter auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only without xylitol and only a little. The ASPCA poison control service describes peanut butter as a snack many dogs love, with one clear instruction for you: read the label.

Why it gets a yellow rating

According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, some sugar-free peanut and nut butters contain xylitol. In dogs, this sweetener causes a rapid, severe drop in blood sugar and can damage the liver in larger amounts. The ASPCA stresses that only a few products contain it, but some do. The high fat content is another consideration. According to the American Kennel Club, too much can lead to weight gain and pancreatitis.

What to keep in mind

  • Read the label: Check the ingredients for xylitol whenever you open a new jar. If in doubt, choose another product.
  • Plain is better: The AKC says unsalted peanut butter with no added sugar is the best choice.
  • Spread it thinly: A thin layer is enough for a chew or to hide a tablet.
  • Small dogs: For small dogs in particular, even a spoonful contains a considerable amount of fat.

What if your dog has eaten peanut butter with xylitol?

Call your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately, even if your dog still seems bright. Keep the jar handy and explain roughly how much is missing, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. According to MSD, the first signs can appear within half an hour: vomiting, weakness and an unsteady walk. Do not induce vomiting yourself. If there was no xylitol in the peanut butter, monitoring is usually enough for an upset stomach.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
