English Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniel im Stil eines Ölgemäldes auf Leinwand über einem Bett

A Cocker does not wag only its tail; its whole back end joins in. The FCI standard explicitly names that constantly wagging tail as a sign of its merry temperament. Its name tells its purpose: as a “cocking spaniel”, it flushed woodcock from dense cover.

Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) Males around 39 to 41 cm, females around 38 to 39 cm
Weight around 13 to 14,5 kg
Life expectancy median 13,3 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat flat, silky, never wiry or wavy, with good feathering on legs and body
Colours in the standard solid black, red, golden, liver, black and tan, liver and tan; bicolour with white (black, orange, liver, lemon), with or without ticking; tricolour; blue, orange, lemon and liver roan, also with tan

Origins

According to the standard, Cocker Spaniels were separated as a breed from Field and Springer Spaniels shortly after the British Kennel Club formed in 1873. As with many gundogs, there are now two directions: working and show lines, with show Cockers stronger and heavier. Anyone seeking a puppy should know which line it comes from.

Temperament

The standard describes a merry, gentle and affectionate dog, full of life and exuberance, fearless in dense cover. Day to day, it is a friendly, cuddly dog with a keen nose, eager to please and fond of praise.

Exercise and activities

A Cocker wants more than a circuit of the block. Give its nose work daily: food searches in grass, dummy training and tracking games. Working lines need considerably more activity than show lines. Practise reliable recall early, because game trails are irresistibly attractive.

Grooming

The silky coat needs brushing several times a week, more often around ears, chest and legs. Regular trimming keeps it in shape. Briefly inspect ears after every walk through grass or water.

Health

With a median lifespan of 13,3 years, the English Cocker is among the longer-lived breeds in McMillan and colleagues’ British analysis. Ears are the weak point: a VetCompass study from British practices found Cocker Spaniels had 1,67 times the odds of outer-ear inflammation compared with crossbreeds; drop-eared dogs overall had 1,76 times the odds (O'Neill et al. 2021). Head shaking, scratching or an ear smell calls for veterinary attention. A genetic test exists for the breed’s inherited kidney disease (Davidson et al. 2007); ask the breeder about it.

Who is a Cocker Spaniel right for?

Families and first-time owners who enjoy being outdoors, want to do scent work and commit to regular coat and ear care.

Who is it less suitable for?

People seeking an easy-care dog without brushing sessions, and homes where it would stay alone for many hours.
