Seven centuries of giving tongue on the trail

Polish literature mentions hunting with tracking hounds as early as the early 13th century, says the standard, and 14th-century records of estates show how highly the nobility valued them. At least two types were established by the 17th century; hunting books around 1820 describe a heavier and a lighter dog. A cynologist from the Carpathian foothills (1903 to 1979) wrote the first breed standard. The FCI provisionally recognised the breed in 2006 and definitively in November 2017. The other Polish scenthound breed in this encyclopedia is the Polish Hound.

Brave, gentle and watchful

Stable and gentle, truly courageous, intelligent, non-aggressive but reserved towards strangers: these are the desired qualities. The standard expressly praises watchdog abilities. Not everyone agrees with its description of easy trainability: the authors of a Polish hunting-trial analysis describe a spirited dog who is difficult to train, especially for young, inexperienced owners.

A mountain hunter for wild boar

These dogs work mainly on wild boar and red deer, occasionally also fox and hare in southern Poland’s mountains. The body is rectangular in a ratio of 9 to 10, strong but not heavy, built for agility over mountainous terrain. In Polish wild-boar trials from 2005 to 2015, the breed formed the largest group, 662 of 1867 dogs, but performed only moderately; the authors suspect training errors. Without hunting, these dogs need plenty of exercise, tracking and a long line wherever wildlife is present.

Undercoat for winter

The harsh outer coat has abundant undercoat in winter and less in summer. Brush several times a week during the transitions. After every woodland walk, check the soft, medium-length drop ears for ticks and grass awns.

An eye study involving 193 dogs

Life expectancy is not established; McMillan and colleagues name the Polish Hunting Dog but do not analyse it. Eyes have received more research. Balicki and colleagues examined 193 dogs in Poland in 2021: 5 dogs (2.6 percent) had cataracts, 3 had iris coloboma and 3 had progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Retinal abnormalities appeared in 16 dogs (8.3 percent). The authors recommend regular eye examinations. Their introduction states that the breed descends from 27 founders, with no mandatory breeding health requirements at that time.

Does a Gończy Polski suit you?

Yes, if you hunt or offer plenty of work in woodland and mountains, have experience with independent dogs and appreciate watchfulness. No, if this would be your first dog, you live in the city or want a dog who greets strangers enthusiastically. Before deciding, ask the breeder to show you the parents’ eye results.

Courageous, watchful and passionate about hunting: the breed quiz helps you assess whether this fits your life; the detailed version is in “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German). For your puppy’s arrival, there is the Puppy Starter Pack. Black and tan or red look good in our dog portraits or as a magazine cover on canvas.
