Portuguese Sheepdog (Cão da Serra de Aires)

Portugiesischer Schäferhund als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch, Raum: altrosafarbenes Schlafzimmer

In their homeland, the Portuguese Sheepdog (Cão da Serra de Aires) is known as the monkey dog. The FCI standard itself gives the nickname, explaining the monkey-like appearance and manner: beard, moustache and eyebrows frame a face that seems constantly ready to comment. These dogs worked the broad Alentejo plains with almost anything that had hooves.

FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs), Section 1 Sheepdogs, Standard No. 93 Cão da Serra de Aires (Portuguese Sheepdog), without working trial
Country of origin Portugal
Size (height at the withers) males 45 to 55 cm, females 42 to 52 cm
Weight males and females 17 to 27 kg
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat long, straight or slightly wavy, slightly harsh and goat-like, with beard, moustache and eyebrows; without undercoat
Colours in the standard yellow, brown, grey, fawn and wolf grey, each light, medium or dark, plus black, with more or less reddish-brown markings; no white patches except a small chest spot

Sheep, goats, horses and pigs

According to the standard, these dogs guard and drive every kind of herd in the Alentejo: sheep, goats, cattle, horses and pigs. They are considered undemanding, hardy and very enduring. The FCI definitively recognised the breed on 16.11.1954. A genomic study describes this as the only sheepdog breed of the Iberian lowlands; mountain relatives are the Pyrenean Sheepdog and the Catalan Sheepdog. They share genetic ancestry with the Rafeiro do Alentejo, which often protected the same flocks (Blaschikoff et al. 2026).

A mind that thinks along

Exceptionally intelligent and very lively, loyally devoted to shepherd and flock, somewhat shy towards strangers and watchful at night: that is the standard’s portrait. These dogs were valued for skilfully keeping flocks together and bringing back strays. At home, they notice everything and readily announce it. Introduce visitors and unfamiliar places early and calmly, so shyness does not become insecurity.

Enjoying the work

The standard says these dogs enjoy their work and now also calls them excellent sporting dogs and watchdogs. Plan long daily walks and mental tasks: herding, agility, obedience or searching games. A garden alone does not keep them occupied.

Goat-like hair without undercoat

The long, slightly harsh hair grows densely over the whole body, even between the toes, but without woolly undercoat. Thorough weekly combing usually prevents knots. Beard hair readily collects food and burrs, so a quick check after walks is worthwhile.

Few dogs, little data

No reliable lifespan figure is available. In a Portuguese study, none of ten tested dogs carried the MDR1 mutation that makes certain medications dangerous in many herding breeds; the authors stress that ten animals are too few to rule it out for the breed (Barroso et al. 2022). They report 81 registered dogs in Portugal for 2017. Genomically, an inbreeding value of 0.18 placed this among the most inbred Portuguese breeds (Blaschikoff et al. 2026). Ask how closely related the parents are and request hip X-ray findings.

A good home with you if

you want a medium-sized, weatherproof dog with wit, enjoy the outdoors and like training together. Herding-dog experience helps, but is not essential if you are willing to attend a good dog training school.

When another dog is a better fit

If the dog spends many hours alone, visitors constantly come and go or you want a dog who never raises the alarm at night.

The breed quiz helps you assess whether a bearded herding dog fits your daily life; the book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) offers more detailed guidance. For the first weeks with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. If your monkey dog already occupies the sofa, your photo can become one of our dog portraits, also available as a magazine cover on canvas.
