Can dogs eat peanuts?

Erdnüsse auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only a few, unsalted and without the shells. Peanuts are not toxic to dogs. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says dry-roasted or raw, unsalted peanuts are the only kind dogs should be given.

Why peanuts get a yellow rating

Three things turn an otherwise harmless nut into a risk. First, fat: according to the AKC, a lot of peanuts can upset the stomach and, if eaten regularly or in large amounts, contribute to pancreatitis. Second, salt: the ASPCA lists excessive thirst and urination as possible effects of too much salt, with vomiting, trembling and seizures in severe cases. Third, mould. The MSD Veterinary Manual describes aflatoxins, toxins produced by mould on peanuts and other nuts that damage the liver and can be fatal to dogs.

What to watch out for

  • Remove the shells: According to the AKC, the fibrous shells can cause choking, especially in small dogs.
  • No seasoning: Keep salted, honey-roasted or seasoned peanuts in your own bowl.
  • No old nuts: If they smell musty or look patchy, throw them away.
  • Peanut butter: If xylitol appears in the ingredients, it is off limits. This sweetener is dangerous for dogs.

What if your dog raids the bag?

One or two peanuts off the floor are no cause for concern. If your dog has eaten a whole bag of salted nuts, provide water and call your vet. Explain roughly how much is missing and whether the nuts were salted or seasoned. If your dog vomits, seems lethargic or has abdominal pain, they need veterinary attention.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
