Castro Laboreiro Dog (Cão de Castro Laboreiro)

Castro-Laboreiro-Hund als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: gelbe Wohnküche

The alarm has a melody of its own. The FCI standard describes barking that starts with a deep sound, builds to a low tone and ends in a high, prolonged note. It is still needed: the standard says wolves continue to attack flocks frequently in the breed’s homeland.

FCI Group 2 (Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs), Section 2.2 Molossoid, Mountain type, Standard No. 170, without working trial
Country of origin Portugal
Height at the withers Males 58 to 64 cm, females 55 to 61 cm, each with tolerance of plus 2 cm
Weight Males 30 to 40 kg, females 25 to 35 kg
Life expectancy Mean 8,4 years from birth in the Portuguese pet registry, 810 dogs (Geraz et al. 2024)
Coat Short, approx. 5 cm on the body, without undercoat; slightly dull, smooth, flat and very dense; thin and soft on head and ears, thick and long on thighs
Colours according to the standard Most often wolf colour, preferably “mountain colour”: brindle on a grey base with hairs in three tones from pine-nut through reddish to mahogany, darker on head, back and shoulders, lighter on belly; small white chest patch permitted

A village on Portugal’s edge

The name comes from Castro Laboreiro village in the municipality of Melgaço, in Portugal’s far north. The standard counts the breed among the Iberian Peninsula’s oldest, describing a rugged mountain homeland between the Minho river and Peneda and Soajo ranges, up to 1400 metres high. Definitive recognition dates from 24.05.1955. A genomic study estimates around 1.134 dogs in 2025 (Blaschikoff et al. 2026).

Gentle at home, uncompromising at the fence

According to the standard, a reliable, gentle family companion. At the same time, the dog guards everything entrusted to them with constant vigilance and regularly patrols the territory. They can show hostility without being quarrelsome. Fearfulness is a fault; confidence is wanted. Strangers on the property are accepted only after your introduction.

Walking rather than sprinting

The standard describes a natural walk most of the time, sometimes an easy trot, with faster movement only for good reason. This is a dog for long, quiet outings and territory to supervise, rather than a jogging companion.

Short coat, little work

The short, dense coat without undercoat takes little effort. A weekly rubber grooming mitt suffices; check nails and ears at the same time.

Figures from the pet registry

The Portuguese pet registry recorded 278.116 dog deaths from 2013 to 2022. For 810 Castro Laboreiro Dogs, life expectancy at birth was 8,44 years, compared with 9,48 for crossbreeds (Geraz et al. 2024). Portuguese values are generally below British ones, and owners entered the breed without pedigree verification. In the genomic study, inbreeding was slightly above the Portuguese-breed mean, based on only nine dogs; show and working lines were distinguishable (Blaschikoff et al. 2026). Studies of individual diseases are lacking.

A good home with you if

You have experience with independent dogs, live in the country, provide a well-secured property and seek a calm, attentive guardian. Southern relatives include the Estrela Mountain Dog (Cão da Serra da Estrela) and the Rafeiro of Alentejo (Rafeiro do Alentejo).

Unsuitable for

First-time owners, city flats, homes with constantly changing visitors and anyone seeking a dog for dog parks and sports grounds.
