Green: safe
Yes, dogs can eat peas. According to the American Kennel Club, peas are neither toxic nor dangerous to dogs. Garden peas, sugar snap peas and snow peas are fine in small amounts.

Why peas are fine
Peas appear in many commercial dog foods and are fine as an occasional small snack. Fresh, frozen or thawed peas are all suitable. You may have heard a debate about peas and heart disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated reports of the heart muscle disease DCM in dogs. 93 percent of the reported foods contained peas or lentils, usually as a main ingredient in grain-free food. The FDA was unable to establish a causal link. This concerns food with a very high proportion of peas, rather than a few peas as a snack.
What to keep in mind
- Avoid canned peas: According to the AKC, canned peas often contain a lot of added salt.
- Be careful with pods: Pods that people eat are suitable for dogs too. Always shell garden peas, though, as the pods can get stuck in the throat.
- Serve plain: Without butter, bacon or seasonings.
- A snack rather than a main meal: Count them towards the daily food allowance.
What if your dog has eaten too many peas?
A portion from a plate or freezer bag is no reason to worry. Too many peas can cause gas, diarrhoea or vomiting. Offer water and keep an eye on your dog. If symptoms do not improve within a day or your dog seems unwell, call your vet. Mention if the peas were cooked with onions or bacon.
If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
