Can dogs eat cottage cheese?

Hüttenkäse auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, in small amounts. Cottage cheese is one of the better choices among cheeses: according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), it has less fat, salt and lactose than other cheeses. It is still a dairy product, though.

Why cottage cheese is marked yellow

Milk and dairy products appear on the ASPCA’s list of foods best avoided by pets. The American animal welfare organisation, which runs a poison control service, explains why: dogs have little lactase, the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar. This can lead to diarrhoea and other digestive problems. According to the AKC, cottage cheese contains less lactose, but dogs with a severe intolerance may react even to small amounts. That is why it is marked yellow: safe, but only a little.

What to watch for

  • Plain: Without herbs, chives or garlic. According to the AKC, these additions can be toxic to dogs.
  • Test first: Give just one teaspoon the first time and see how your dog reacts.
  • Useful for tablets: A little cottage cheese can hide a tablet, provided your vet has no objection.
  • Not for every dog: If your dog is overweight or has known food intolerances, ask your vet first.
  • Count it in: Even low-fat cheese counts towards the daily allowance.

What if your dog has licked out the tub?

A whole tub at once can cause wind and diarrhoea. Offer water, make the next meal smaller and monitor your dog. If diarrhoea lasts longer than a day, your dog vomits or seems lethargic, call your vet. If the cottage cheese contained herbs or garlic, mention this when you call.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
