Can dogs eat nectarines?

Nektarinen auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only the flesh. Nectarines are stone fruits, and as with peaches, the stone must be removed first.

Why it gets a yellow rating

Writing for the veterinary website PetMD, vet Barri J. Morrison says nectarines are non-toxic to dogs, but their stones are toxic. The stone can also become lodged in the throat or cause an intestinal blockage. British animal charity PDSA lists nectarines among dog-friendly fruits, with the instruction to remove the stone. Nectarines have no entry of their own in the ASPCA plant database.

What to keep in mind

  • Remove the stone first: Wash the nectarine, halve it, discard the stone and then cut the flesh into small pieces.
  • A little flesh: Too much nectarine can cause diarrhoea or stomach pain because of the fibre and sugar.
  • Be careful with excess weight: According to PetMD, sugary fruit is not a good choice for dogs with diabetes or excess weight.
  • Fruit on the floor: Do not leave half-eaten fruit with its stone lying around. Many dogs swallow the stone whole.

What if your dog has swallowed the stone?

Call your vet and explain when it happened, how big the stone was and how much your dog weighs. Gagging, repeated vomiting, refusing food or an inability to pass stools require prompt help. Do not induce vomiting yourself.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
