Neapolitan Mastiff (Mastino Napoletano)

Mastino Napoletano, groß, schwer und grau, auf einer Wiese

Cat-like at a walk, slow and bear-like: that is how the FCI standard describes the Neapolitan Mastiff’s (Mastino Napoletano) gait. Add males weighing up to 70 kilos and skin forming folds, wrinkles and a double dewlap. That skin shapes this dog’s life.

FCI Group 2 (Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain Dogs), Section 2.1 Molossoid, Mastiff type, Standard No. 197, without working trial
Country of origin Italy
Size (height at the withers) males 65 to 75 cm, females 60 to 68 cm
Weight males 60 to 70 kg, females 50 to 60 kg
Life expectancy median 9.3 years in a UK analysis of 584,734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat short, harsh and dense, the same length throughout, no more than 1.5 cm, without fringes
Colours in the standard preferably grey, lead grey or black; also brown, fawn and deep red, all also brindle; hazelnut, dove grey and Isabella tolerated; a small white chest or toe spot allowed

Heir to the Roman molossoids

According to the standard, this dog descends from the Roman molossoid described by Columella in the first century and survived at the foot of Vesuvius. Selective breeding resumed in 1947. A close genetic relative is the Cane Corso.

Folds as prescribed

The standard requires abundant loose skin; a dog lacking folds, wrinkles or dewlap is disqualified. At the same time, the skin must never compromise welfare or health, folds must never cover the eyes, and entropion or ectropion also lead to exclusion.

Eyelids and cherry eye in figures

In UK veterinary practice data from 2019, the Neapolitan Mastiff had the highest odds of drooping lower eyelids (ectropion) of all breeds, around 427 times those of crossbreeds (O'Neill et al. 2025). During that year, 4.3 percent were affected, while 6.9 percent had inward-rolling eyelids (entropion). The breed also led for cherry eye, prolapse of the third-eyelid gland, at 4.9 percent (O'Neill et al. 2022). In Italy, 92.1 percent of Mastini receiving an eye examination had at least one presumed inherited eye disorder (Guandalini et al. 2017).

Weight, joints and lifespan

McMillan and colleagues found a median lifespan of 9.3 years among 367 Mastini and a 1.77-fold increased risk of early death. A breed-specific figure for hip and elbow dysplasia is lacking; in Swedish X-ray data, Dogues de Bordeaux and Bullmastiffs had abnormal hips in 75.4 and 65.1 percent of cases respectively (Engdahl et al. 2026).

A calm guardian with bulk

Steady, loyal and non-aggressive, a watchful protector of house and inhabitants: that is the standard’s description. They need early socialisation and people able to hold them securely even as powerful adolescents. Some German federal states list them as a restricted breed with conditions attached; check with the state or your local authority before buying.

Who may still be a good match

Experienced, calm people with a home on one level, time for daily eye and skin-fold care and savings for eyelid surgery. Ask breeders for both parents’ eye results and X-rays.

When to decline

If folds and bulk are the main attraction, if you want a sporting partner or if you could neither carry nor restrain the dog in an emergency.

Large, heavy, grey Neapolitan Mastiff on a meadow

The breed quiz helps you assess whether a large watchdog fits your life; our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) offers more detail. Calm guardians without folded skin and with normal-length muzzles include the Hovawart and the Pyrenean Mountain Dog; find all breeds in the Dog Breed Encyclopedia. Large molossoids also await homes in shelters and rescue organisations, occasionally including a Mastino. For the first weeks, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack.
