Can dogs eat chives?

Red: toxic

No, chives are toxic to dogs. The ASPCA lists them as toxic to dogs, cats and horses in its plant database.

Why chives are dangerous

Chives belong to the genus Allium, like onions, garlic and leeks. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, sulphur compounds in these plants damage red blood cells. They are released when the plant is cut, cooked or chewed. Although onions and garlic are most often involved, Pet Poison Helpline lists all alliums as toxic to dogs. Japanese breeds such as Akitas and Shiba Inus are more sensitive, according to Pet Poison Helpline.

What signs should you look for?

The ASPCA lists vomiting, red blood cell destruction, blood in the urine, weakness, a rapid heartbeat and panting. According to MSD, the effects of anaemia often appear only after several days. A dog that seems well today is therefore not yet in the clear.

What to keep in mind

  • Secure herb beds and balcony planters so your dog cannot nibble the chives.
  • Do not give your dog herb quark, herb butter or scrambled eggs with chives.
  • Check leftover soup, salad and potato salad for herbs too.

What if your dog has eaten chives?

Call your vet or an emergency veterinary service, even if your dog only had a nibble. Explain what was eaten (fresh, dried or in a dish), roughly how much, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Do not give home remedies or induce vomiting yourself.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
