What really matters when choosing a breed
Most people fall for a face first. A photo, a dog in the park, a puppy on Instagram. It's human, but it's a poor guide. Appearance tells you little about what your daily life together will look like in three years. Whether your dog lies calmly beside you in a café or is still dismantling the sofa after a two-hour walk depends largely on what the breed was originally bred to do.
Take an honest look at your daily life
The key question isn't which dog appeals to you, but what life you can offer them. How much time do you have on an ordinary Tuesday, rather than on holiday? How long are you away from home? Who will help if you're ill? A dog will be with you for ten years or more, through house moves, job changes and perhaps children. Plan around the life you actually have.
Working dogs need work
Many popular breeds are working dogs: herding dogs such as the Border Collie and Australian Shepherd, hunting dogs such as the Weimaraner and Beagle, and service dogs such as the Malinois. They're clever and learn quickly. That's exactly what makes them demanding. A walk alone is rarely enough; they want to think, search and work with you. Without a job, they'll find one themselves. That may mean herding joggers or chewing doorframes.
Size means more than space
A large dog needs more than extra room in the car. Food costs more, vet bills often do too, and you must be able to hold them safely on the lead, even when 40 kilos suddenly charge forward. Small dogs aren't automatically easier. Terriers such as the Jack Russell have plenty of energy and minds of their own, and some small breeds love barking at length.
Coats, shedding and grooming
Less hair in the house usually means more grooming for the dog. Poodles, Maltese and Havanese shed very little but need daily brushing or regular grooming appointments. Breeds with undercoats shed handfuls of fur twice a year. Both are manageable if you know beforehand.
Health and background
Some breeds have a higher risk of certain conditions, such as dogs with very short noses or very large bodies. Our breed profiles openly explain what to look out for. Ask the breeder about health screening for the parents, and take your time. Responsible breeders have waiting lists, not puppies on demand.
What about mixed-breed dogs?
A quiz like this can only compare breeds, but many dogs that would suit you best don't have one. Rescue centres and animal welfare organisations have adult dogs whose personalities are already known. That's a big advantage: you can see whether a dog can stay alone, how they are with children and how much exercise they need. The people there give honest advice because they want the match to work.
How this quiz works
The quiz compares your ten answers with the traits of breeds profiled in our magazine: size, exercise needs, suitability for first-time owners, time alone, children, shedding and grooming, barking and responsiveness to guidance. The values come from those articles. Where an article says nothing about a trait, we use a neutral value. The result is a starting point for your research, rather than a decision. Read the profiles of your top 3, talk to people who own those breeds and meet the dog before committing.
Common questions about the breed quiz
How accurate is the breed quiz?
The quiz compares your answers with the traits in our breed profiles. It shows which breeds broadly suit your daily life. Every dog is an individual, so the result can't replace meeting them or talking to people who know the breed well.
Which breeds are included in the quiz?
All breeds from our Dog Breed Encyclopedia whose traits we could substantiate using the breed standard and encyclopedia entry. The selection grows with the encyclopedia. We don't recommend breeds whose standards cause health problems; if your answers point to one, we'll suggest an alternative. Very rare breeds appear no higher than third place in the top 3.
Which dogs suit first-time owners?
Dogs that enjoy working with you, respond well to guidance and don't have very high working needs suit first-time owners. Our profiles describe the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Poodle, Havanese and Bichon Frisé as suitable examples. An adult rescue dog with a known personality can also be an excellent choice.
Does the quiz send data to YouTube?
No, not automatically. The quiz runs only in your browser and stores nothing. Videos in the result cards initially appear as placeholders. Only when you tap play is the video loaded from YouTube, using privacy-enhanced mode via youtube-nocookie.com.
Can a dog suit my life if I work full-time?
That depends on how long the dog would be alone and who looks after them during the day. Many dogs can learn to stay alone for a few hours, but a full working day is too long for most. Plan for a dog sitter, dog day care or days working from home, and choose a breed that copes well with time alone.
