Can dogs eat salt?

Salz auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Only in traces. A lot of salt is dangerous. The ASPCA warns against too much salt and very salty foods: they can cause excessive thirst, increased urination and disturbances in blood salt levels.

Why salt gets a yellow rating

The ASPCA lists vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, tremors and seizures as signs of salt poisoning, with death in the worst cases. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, dogs usually vomit within a few hours, followed by possible weakness, diarrhoea, muscle tremors and seizures. Water matters: MSD says salt poisoning is unlikely as long as fresh drinking water is available. Yellow therefore means no panic over a pinch, but no deliberate addition of salt either.

Where large amounts of salt are found

  • Salt dough: Pet Poison Helpline lists homemade ornaments and modelling dough made from salt dough as typical causes.
  • Road salt: Eating snow containing road salt is a common route in winter.
  • Seawater: According to MSD, dogs that swallow a lot of seawater at the beach without access to fresh water can take in too much sodium.
  • Snacks: Crisps, pretzel sticks, salted nuts and sausages.

What if your dog has consumed a lot of salt?

If your dog has eaten salt dough, road salt or large amounts of salty snacks, or drunk a lot of seawater, call your vet immediately. Explain what was consumed, roughly how much, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Never give salt water to induce vomiting: both Pet Poison Helpline and the MSD Veterinary Manual specifically warn against this.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
