Yellow: with caution
Yes, cooked and without the skin. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is listed as non-toxic to dogs in the ASPCA plant database. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), however, you should never serve it raw.
Why sweet potato is marked yellow
Here, preparation determines the colour. According to the AKC, raw sweet potatoes are hard to chew, can upset the stomach and may cause an intestinal obstruction. Cooked until soft, however, the root is easy to digest and provides fibre and vitamins. The AKC also refers to a warning from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA): it is investigating cases of heart muscle disease (DCM) in dogs whose diets contain large proportions of pulses or potatoes. As a small addition or treat, this is no cause for concern, but as a main ingredient it is something to discuss with your vet.
How to serve sweet potato safely
- Boil or steam: Until completely soft.
- Remove the skin: According to the AKC, it is harder to digest with the skin on.
- Keep it plain: No butter, salt, sugar or seasoning, so avoid sharing it from a roasting tray with rosemary.
- Take care with diabetes and excess weight: According to the AKC, sweet potato causes blood sugar to rise quickly.
- Count it in: Carbohydrates count towards the daily food allowance.
What if your dog has eaten raw sweet potato?
A nibbled piece is usually no problem. Check that your dog is eating and passing stools normally. If your dog vomits repeatedly, stops eating or has a hard, painful abdomen, call your vet, as these can be signs of an intestinal obstruction.
If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
