Yellow: with caution
Yes, in small amounts. According to the American Kennel Club, dogs tolerate fresh or ground ginger. That does not make it a remedy for every dog.
Why ginger gets a yellow rating
Culinary ginger has no specific entry in the ASPCA’s plant database, which lists only ornamental plants with similar names. This assessment therefore relies mainly on the AKC. It considers ginger safe in small amounts, but warns that a lot causes wind and nausea. Ginger thins the blood and can lower blood pressure and blood sugar. Its safety for pregnant and nursing dogs has not been established. Because it is suitable only in small amounts and not for every dog, it gets a yellow rating.
When to avoid it
- Clotting disorders or surgery: Do not give ginger to dogs with blood clotting problems or before an operation.
- Painkillers: If your dog takes anti-inflammatory painkillers, ask your vet first.
- Diabetes and heart conditions: Ginger can affect blood sugar and blood pressure. Your vet should decide whether it is suitable.
- Pickled ginger: Sushi ginger is acidic and may contain salt. It is best kept for yourself.
How to serve ginger if you choose to
Peel fresh ginger thoroughly and grate or chop it very finely, then sprinkle a little over the food. Start with a tiny amount and watch how your dog reacts. If they develop severe wind, nausea or diarrhoea, stop giving ginger. If you want to use it specifically for nausea, such as motion sickness, discuss it with your vet.
If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
